Upcoming Changes to Commanders and Troops

May 29, 2020 - The Avatar: Pandora Rising Dev Team

In our next update there are going to be some big changes to the Commander roster, and to leveling Commanders and Troops. While these changes may come with an initial sting, they will allow future content to be more exciting and enable us to focus efforts on other late game content. We wanted to give you as much heads up as possible, and a bit of insight into why some of these changes are happening. A package of Commander Chests, Talent Kits, Credits, Troop Shards, and Woodsprites will be sent to all players with the update to help adjust to these changes. This package will be increased in tiers based on the extent of purchases you've made.

Commander Rarity Changes

Backfilling our Commander roster rather than building from a base was not working out well. We changed talents for existing Commanders far too often and it didn’t encourage you to build diverse rosters. We wanted to address this immediately before we consider inviting more players to Pandora

After careful consideration, we determined the best solution was to move some existing Commanders down a rarity level to fill out the roster. This enables us to build on a strong foundation, explore new designs, and make less jarring changes to existing Commanders over time. We hope the result of this is that players find newly released Commanders more exciting to pursue. Any Commanders receiving rarity changes will have their base stats lowered to their respective rarity tier. Here are the Commander rarity changes:

  • Navi
  • Neytiri, Tsu’tey, Zumkana, Mo’at, and Ukwala are now Rare.
  • Vokan, Saeyla, Swin’ara, Tsu’mong, Morang, Lunapey, and Ruk’e are now Uncommon.
  • Tsentey is now Common.
  • RDA
  • Morgado, Wainfleet, Augustine, Balogan, and Selfridge are now Rare.
  • Casey, Fike, Michaels, Stojack, Spellman, Castro, and Sakal are now Uncommon.
  • Chacon is now Common.

Troop Rarity Changes

When introducing Troops to players, we want to ensure that we’re gradually exposing them to ones that are rarer and more powerful. As such we’ll be moving both Scorpion Gunship and Titanothere from Epic to Rare. Their stats will remain the same, aside from the buffs they’re getting with the update (spoilers). All players will be receiving 30 shards for each of these Troops with the update.

Balancing Around Rarity Changes

Commanders are built and balanced around their rarity levels. When looking at what Troops they buff we try to ensure one isn’t used by too many Commanders, and that each has their own theme. Higher rarity Commanders will also generally buff rarer Troops. As we’ve made rarity changes to most Commanders as well as Titanothere and Scorpion Gunship, there will be a balance pass on all Commanders for this Update.

Commander and Troop Shard Leveling Updates

One of the things we’re very proud of is how you all find ways to push the limits of progression. You’ve shattered our expectations for how fast you’d chew through content. We found that leveling via shards was an area we needed to address in two respects: we needed to make unlocking Rares more exciting and to reign in how quickly levels were gained.

We’ve revised the amount of shards needed to unlock Commanders and Troops. Essentially you will need to save more shards to unlock rarer Commanders and Troops, but they will unlock at a higher level for less shards. This ensures you get credit towards upgrading your Commanders and Troops with your unlock cost:

  • Commanders
  • Epic
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 30 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 300 shards, level 15
  • Rare
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 15 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 150 shards, level 12
  • Uncommon
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 5 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 10 shards, level 4
  • Common
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 5 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 10 shards, level 1
  • Troops
  • Epic
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 30 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 150 shards, level 12
  • Rare
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 15 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 75 shards, level 9
  • Uncommon
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 5 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 10 shards, level 3
  • Common
  • Pre-patch: Unlocks at 5 shards, level 1
  • Post-patch: Unlock at 10 shards, level 1

Beyond around level 12, we’ve identified that Commanders and Troops should require an increasing amount of shards per level. Overall, this roughly doubles the amount of shards you'll need to level. We’ll be doubling any unspent shards you have to account for this change.

On the Recent Slowing of Progression

We know those that have been with us since the initial launch are feeling that their progress has been slowing down greatly at the late game. Full disclosure, we did not anticipate you to power up so quickly and have been making reactive changes to ensure our progress curve is healthier. We know that has not been the best experience and appreciate your patience and continued feedback to help improve the game for everyone. Now that we have made great progress with these tuning passes, we can focus a bit more on more content and alternate progression paths for the mid to late game players.

The next update will be in the coming weeks and also includes: new Troops and Commanders, balance changes, Sacred Site updates aimed at stopping prolonged wars, new daily events, and more. Stay tuned, and good luck on the battlefield.
